A NATIONAL seminar on 'Emerging trends in pharmaceutical education and research', organized by Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India (APTI) was held yesterday at the campus of Lord Shiva College of Pharmacy Sirsa.

Prof S.K. Kulkarni Dean University Instructions Punjab University Chandigarh in his key note address said that the Indian pharmaceutical industry and phrama professionals should gear up for the new global challenges and changes that are on the anvil to the Indian scenario. Mr. Kulkarni said that India should get ready for management of life style diseases that are a reality in the west since last two decades. He said that while India has progressed tremendously in many sectors like IT BPO etc but India’s spending on health care is quiet lackluster and India as of today stands at position 171 in a list of 175 countries. He said that India spends about 5% of the GDP on health care and out of this just 1% comes in the form of Government expenditure. But India is fast becoming a destination for clinical trails and development of Pharma specialties. He urged the pharmaceutical students that a brilliant future is waiting for them but they must work hard and calculate up to date knowledge about the rapid changes to shape their future.

Prof. Kulkarni highlighted global opportunities available for budding pharmacists and narrated the contribution and growth of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry since independence till date. He explained in a lucid manner how Indian economy has improved for the better and the trend of brain drain has reversed. It is now possible for pharmaceutical professionals to earn in dollars on American style staying in India itself while working for multinational firms.

The keynote address was followed by two scientific sessions. The speakers for the scientific sessions were, Prof. Saranjit Singh, Head, Deptt. of Pharmaceutical Analysis, NIPER, Mohali spoke on "Role of Teachers in View of Latest Stringent Regulatory Requirements". Prof. A.K. Madan, Dean, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, MDU, Rohtak delivered a talk on "Role of Graph Theory in Drug Design & Discovery". Dr. Firoz Anwar, Asstt. Director, AICTE, New Delhi, described the importance of continuous upgradation of syllabus and AICTE guidelines for receiving grants by various institutions. This session was chaired by Prof. Emeritus, Dr. J.D. Sharma, Ex. Drug Controller J & K, Lord Shiva College of Pharmacy, Sirsa.

The National Conference that was organized on April 28, 2007 at Lord Shiva College of Pharmacy, Sirsa (Haryana), under the aegis of the Haryana branch of APTI was a big success in view of response received from scientists, academicians and industrialists, who participated actively in the conference from different states. There were 130 research papers presented by young research scholars in the form of posters.
The conference was inaugurated by lighting the lamp in the Seminar Hall of the College at the hands of Prof. S.K. Kulkarni, Director Deshkamal Bishnoi, Secretary Sh. Som Parkash Advocate, and Convener Sh. Yashpal Singla. The scientific abstract book was released and distributed to all the delegates after the inauguration function. The meticulous efforts taken by Mr. Sameer Dhingra and Mr. Dalbir Singh in bringing out the abstract book in time deserve appreciation. The cover page, overall get-up and technical contents were impressive and flawless.

In the post-lunch session Dr. B.S. Bhoop, Reader, Dept. of Pharmaceutics, UIPS, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered a talk on "Assessing Biopharmaceutical Performance of Oral Drug Delivery Systems", followed by Prof. S.H. Ansari, Head, Dept. of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi on "Wound Healing and Herbal Drugs". Dr. Devender Pathak, Director, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Rajiv Academy for Pharmacy, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh described the significance of "Microwave assisted organic synthesis" in his brief address. The post-lunch session was Chaired by Dr. Milind Parle, Professor of Pharmacology, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar.
It was an herculean task for the judges to evaluate 130 posters of different pharmaceutical disciplines with in stipulated time frame. The quality of all posters had been excellent. The research scholars had taken special pains in view of the best poster contest. The responsibility of inviting, selecting and hosting various posters on the three floors of Lord Shiva College of Pharmacy was performed by Mr. Nitin Bansal and Mr. Ramesh Jangra.
Two prizes were awarded for the best research paper presented on the criteria of originality, quality of presentation and major findings. The poster entitled "Taste Jamun for Positive Brain Test" authored by Ms. Sheetal Chaudhary and Dr. Milind Parle of Pharmacology Division, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar and poster entitled "A validated stability-indicating HPLC method to study the forced degradation of glibenclamide and characterization of its degradation product" authored by Gulshan Bansal, Manjeet Singh and K. C. Jindal, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research, Punjabi University, Patiala were adjudged as the best posters of the poster contest. The winners of the best posters award were felicitated with momento, cash prize of rupees 1000 each and certificates to all the authors.
The scientific session was followed by entertaining cultural programme organized by the talented students of Lord Shiva College of Pharmacy, Sirsa. Mrs. Amrita Parle, Head, Dept. of Pharmacy, Meerabai Polytechnic, New Delhi recited a classical song during the cultural event, which was appreciated.
Mr. Sameer Dhingra informed Sirsa News that Mr. Desh Kamal Bishnoi, Director, Lord Shiva College of Pharmacy and Mr. Som Parakash Advocate, Secretary, Lord Shiva Charitable Trust welcomed the delegates. The responsibility of catering was of Mr. Jitender Singh and Sanjay Singla. The accommodation and transport arrangements were manned by Mr. Vijay Naresh Dhull. The Reception and Registration committee comprised of Ms. Mamta Dhingra and Ms. Sunayna Jain, the stage management committee consisting of Dr. Sunil Kumar Singh and Ms. Renu Kadian.
