High-Density Cotton Planting, is a system of cotton plantation taken up by the Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR) on a trial basis this year is likely to bring an increase in the productivity of cotton in the country.
The CICR has set up 2,600 demonstration plots, covering 37 districts of the country under the “High-Density Planting” that involves closer spacing of cotton plants from the present 67.5 cm (row to row) X 60 cm (plant to plant) to 67.5 cm (row to row) X 10 cm (plant to plant).

While in the current 67.5 cm X 60 cm system, the number of plants is 2,4691 in one hectare, by close spacing it will change to 67.5 cm X 10 cm system. The number of plants increases to 14,8148 in a hectare of land.

Increased number of plants and hence bolls will lead to increased productivity of the crop.

Twelve such demonstration plots have been set up in seven villages of Sirsa, the district that counts for almost 40 per cent of the cotton produced in Haryana.

“India stands at number one in the world as far as the area under cotton is concerned and it is second to China in the matter of total production and total export of cotton. But, when it comes to productivity per hectare, our country stands at the 24th position in the world with even Pakistan having better productivity,” said Dr Dalip Monga, a Principal Scientist and Head of Sirsa-based regional centre of the CICR.

By adopting the “High-Density Planting” technique, farmers will be able to increase their productivity by raising the number of plants and bolls per hectare.

“Most of the demonstration plots have been set up for trials in the central and southern India, while in Sirsa, such plots have been set up in Begu, Fatehpuria, Mohammedpuria, Rangri Khera, Sawantkhera, Bhuna and Bakrianwali villages," said Dr Monga.
In Sirsa DR SL Ahuja is the project co –ordinator of these trials.
Inputs from SirsaNews
Apart from CICR Initiative similar trials are also being carried out on Bt- Cotton under PPP. Seed companies like Nuzeeveedu, Bayer, Mahyco Monsanto Biotech India has also conducted trials in the North central and southern zones last year using some 60 different hybrids and the results have been encouraging, a spokesperson said. Monsanto has reported a 13-65 per cent rise in yields in Gujarat, while the yields were up 44 per cent in Maharashtra. In Andhra, the yields were up by about 48 per cent, the spokesperson said.
Maintaining of vegetative growth of these plants may need the use of Plant Growth Regulators. While with Bt Cotton it means more input cost in the form of extra seed, and growth regulators, but the same will be easily offset by the much higher yield. In normal cotton varieties the cost of seed will be only marginally higher, but the cotton will be prone to pest attacks (Bollworms) to which Bt is resistant. Newer technology like Stacked (Insect Resistant and Herbicide Tolerant) Bt+Ht Cotton have also been developed and are only waiting Govt approvals to reach the farmers.

On 14th September, Former Union Minister, Senior BJP Leader and BJP SC Cell National President Shri Sanjay Paswan today visited Medanta hospital in Gurgaon to enquire about the well being of INLD chief and former Haryana chief minister Chaudhary Om Prakash Chautala. During the meeting which lasted for more than 35 minutes Shri Sanjay Paswan asked about Chautala’s health and wishes INLD chief’s early recovery. Earlier former MLA from Jodhpur Shri Narayan Ram Bera, Former Education minister Shri Bahadur Singh, MLA Col. Raghubir Singh Chillar, MLA Shri Nasim Ahmad, MLA from Gharaunda Shri Narender Sangwan and many other senior leaders also met Shri Chautala and asked about INLD Chief’s health and wishes his early recovery.
On 11th September: Senior INLD leader and MLA from Ellenabad Chaudhary Abhay Singh Chautala while cricizing the Hooda Government for increase in the salaries and allowances of CM, ministers, Haryana Vidhansabha speaker, deputy speaker and MLAs, today said that Congress government is not working for the welfare of state and just looting the Haryana ruthlessly. Chaudhary Abhay Singh Chautala said that Haryana’s farmers demanded for the bonus on wheat and employees were demanding for salaries at par with Punjab employees but the state government literally ignored their genuine demands by saying that the government is suffering from financial crises. He further said that congress government suspended the opposition MLAs from the session and increased their salaries and allowances with their own wish.
He further added that the Hooda government raised issues of Chaudhary Devilal’s trusts and societies in the assembly just to defame the name of Chaudhary Devilal’s family whereas CBI had already investigated about Devilal’s trusts and the case is pending in Court.  He said that none of trust had taken government’s land for free and there are no irregularities in any of the trusts. Since last nine years, the congress is in power in state as well as in centre and all the government agencies have already investigated the case and found nothing.  He said that people respect Chaudhary Devilal and with their free wish they named educational institutions and social institutions on the name of Chaudhary Devilal as a matter of respect. He further said that Hooda government has nothing to do with trusts and societies but they have a big problem with the name of Chaudhary Devilal and Chaudhary Omprakash Chautala.
Chautala Further said that assembly speaker at the will of the government converted the assembly into the Congress meeting. He said that by discussing about the trusts and societies, the Congress MLA’s were just trying to bursting out their frustrations about the scams and scandals which were exposed in the CDs. Chaudhary Abhay Singh Chautala said that CM Hooda has done the country’s biggest land scam and now he is trying to hiding his misdeeds by doing all this. He said that the gaushala in Kanwarpur and khajakhera in district Sirsa on the name of Chaudhary Devilal are totally false and not a single member of Chaudhary Om Parkash Chautala’s family is a member of this gaushala committee but presently the gaushala is managed by CM Hooda’s blue eyed boy Gopal Kanda and his family. On the same way, he said that people of educationally backward Odhan Area in sirsa district opened a Women college and school to educate the girl’s students by making a society named Mata Harki Devi Memorial Society and not a single member of Chaudhary Om Parkash Chautala’s family is a member of this Harki Devi Society.
INDIAN NATIONAL LOKDAL
Released another Press note on September 11th from Chandigarh:
INLD State President and former speaker of Haryana Vidhan sabha, Shri Ashok Arora criticized Congress for adopting dual standards on the issue related to disqualification of MLAs and MPs and passing a resolution against Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president, Abhay Singh Chautala. INLD MLA and acting president of Haryana Olympic Association, Shri  Ashok Arora said that the UPA government had introduced a bill in the parliament to prevent any “tainted” MP/MLA from being disqualified (if an appeal is filed within 90 days ) to contest the polls. The bill was introduced after the apex court recently held that the Members of Parliament and MLAs, on conviction for offences, will be immediately disqualified from holding membership of the House without being given three months’ time for appeal, as was the case before.
He said that minister or former ministers, CPS and MLA’s of Hooda government have been charge-sheeted in one or another case. He further said that Hooda government’s then State Home Minister Gopal Kanda is facing charges of sexual harassment and forcing Geetika Sharma and her mother to commit suicide. Even hooda government’s state sports minister Sukhbir Kataria is facing the charges of fake votes, many MLAs and CPS involved in CLUs CD scam, former transport minister Omprakash Jain and Zile Ram Sharma are facing the charges of bribe on the name of jobs and murder of former sarpanch of Village Kambopura Karam Singh. He further said that CM himself have the allegations of doing scam of  worth rupees 3.5 lakh crores on the name of CLUs and IAS officer’s Ashok Khemka’s report has already made disclosures on this issue.
He further said that, on the very first day of the assembly session, speaker has suspended the opposition from the whole assembly session so that they won’t get a chance to face the opposition on the corruption issues. Further he said that opposition MLAs did not get a single chance to participate in the assembly session. He said that this was the first time in the history of assembly that opposition was suspended for the whole session and the assembly was become merely a congress meeting.

When the taught becomes the teacher!
Happiness, satisfaction, and pride are the feelings that come to my mind as I look back at nearly 25 years of teching experience. Indeed, fulfilling! A warm glow envelopes any teacher when suddenly in the market place, a grown-up person bends down, touches your feet,  and with a twinkle in his eyes, asks – “ Ma’m, do you recognize me?”  On such occasions, I feel humbled and at the same time – TALL!!

My initial years with the toddlers were eventful. These bundles of energy, matched my energy. I sang, recited, danced, and made drawings with them. Being young, I was impatient at times, but those angelic faces with round cheeks, big eyes and podgy physique,  ensured that impatience soon melted in the air. These four/five year olds were pretty sure about how they wanted the class to be held. They taught me to imagine, to shed every inhibition, and to be pure at heart. They laid the foundation stone of my teaching career.

Building on versatilities and armed with plentiful ideas, I moved on to the middle section. The growing teens, often at conflict with themselves, defiant and bold, were handful. Teaching, counseling, mothering and being a confidante – all had to be combined to deal  day to day. Academics will be there but more important was all associated conflicts of a twelve/thirteen year old. This age group sought answers and wanted every query to be replied, however awkward it  may be. They provided  me  an insight into the world  of  a teenager where evry minor issue is a major one and every demand is an order. I understood the troubled teens perfectly, and kept alternating between a teacher, a disciplinarian . a confidante, and a mentor!  Phew!!

Thereafter I moved to senior section. All grownups! Really, I thought so. Anyway, this age group of sixteen/seventeen was starry eyed, seemed to know everything, ready to explore all forbidden things, and yet owned up follies when confronted. Armed with experience, one improvised. If I was gentle for some, tough for others; friendly for some, difficult for others – but one thing about me was common – “ she makes learning of  HISTORY easy!!”  Thank God, I figured in their every day talk. This age group turned me into a friend, a facilitator, a guide, and above all a A MOTHER! I laughed, joked, and even mimicked them! In the class, I involved children in sharing the latest information and made full use of our smart class rooms. As a result, the ice was never there! They made me very happy, energetic, and most importantly updated. I moved with times. I was never an old piece, I would never be obsolete. I was appreciated, loved and respected for genuinely being with my students. They could count on me – any day, any time, any problem.

When today, I look back, I do feel that I progressed and performed well as a teacher because I was ever a LEARNER! I learnt at every stage, kept my mind open, improvised and changed myself with the changing times. The teacher in me remained alive always because I kept updating myself with the latest changes in the field of education and also in the society. I evolved!

On this ‘Teachers Day’, I salute all these wonderful children who taught me at every stage of life and kept the TEACHER in me ALIVE!!!  Thank you, dear students.

About SIRSA on September 1st 2013 (A brief up to date History of Sirsa from Archives of www.SirsaNews.com published earlier here)
SIRSA is a district in the Haryana State of India. Its history dates back to the time of Mahabharata. At one time, the Sarasvati River (now known as Ghagger) flowed in this area. Baba Sarsainath is said to have been the first person to come here to do 'tapp'.

Its ancient name was Sairishaka, which finds mention in Mahabharata, Panini's Ashatadhayayi and Divyavadan. In Mahabharata, Sairishaka is described as being taken by Nakula in his conquest of the western quarter. It must have been a flourishing city in the 5th century B.C. as it has been mentioned by Panini. According to local tradition, an unknown king named Saras founded the town in 7th century A.D. and built a fort. The material remains of an ancient fort can still be seen in the South-East of the present town. According to another tradition, the name has its origin from the sacred river SARASVATI which one flowed near it. Hence a large chunk of populace call it by the name SARSA. The derivation of name Sirsa, is also attributed to the abundance of siris trees in the neighborhood of Sirsa which seems quite plausible for it finds some corroboration also in Panini and his commentator. In ancient period, Sirsa was also known as Sirsapattan.
In the time of Akbar, Sirsa was one of the dasturs of Hisar Feroza Sarkar and much of its area lying in the present Sirsa district was covered by Mahals of Fatehabad, Bhattu, Bhangiwal (Darba), Sirsa, Bhatner (or Hanumangarh, Rajasthan) and Paniyana (Rajasthan). With the decline of the Mughal Empire, the track comprising Sirsa district came under the control of Marathas. The whole of Delhi Territory of which the tract formed part was ceded by the Marathas to the British in 1810.
In 1819, the Delhi territory was divided into three districts - the Central which included Delhi, The Southern including Rewari, and the North-Western including Panipat, Hansi, Hisar, Sirsa and Rohtak. In 1820, the latter was again sub-divided into Northern and Western and Sirsa alongwith Hansi, Hisar and Bhiwani formed Western district (Haryana district and later known Hisar district). In 1837, Sirsa and Rania parganas were taken out of Haryana district and alongwith Guda and Malaut parganas were formed into a separate district called Bhattiana. The whole of the Delhi territory alongwith district of Bhattiana and Hisar was transferred to Punjab in 1858 and the district of Bhattiana was renamed as Sirsa.
The Sirsa district which comprised three tahsils of Sirsa, Dabwali and Fazilka was abolished in 1884 and Sirsa tahsil (consisting of 199 Villages) and 126 villages of Dabwali tahsil formed one tahsil and the same was merged in the Hisar district and the rest of the portion was transferred to the Firozpur district (Punjab). There was no change till the Independence of the country except that a village was transferred from Sirsa tahsil to the then state of Bikaner in 1906. The entire area of the district was included in the new state of Haryana on November 1, 1966. In 1968, Sirsa tehsil was bifurcated into Sirsa and Dabwali tahsils. In 1974, three villages of Dabwali tahsil were transferred to Sirsa tahsil.
On September 1, 1975, Sirsa was again made a separate District of Haryana.
Sirsa as of today is fast emerging as an education city, it now boasts of several technical colleges, pharmacy, medical and paramedical institutes, PG Colleges, B.Ed. Colleges, and one UGC recognized University. Its longtime status of agriculturally advanced district remains undisputed even today. Sirsa boasts of good production of Wheat, Rice & Cotton mainly along with mustard, barley, pulses, vegetables and citrus fruits.
Sirsa is also known for its various Religious places inside the main city and the surroundings. Its known to be bound by various religious Deras and Kutiyaas from all its sides. The main city has several Hindu temples including Dera Sarsainath, 2 historic Sikh Gurdwaras, one ancient Jama Masjid, Tomb Khwaja Pir, two old Churches. On the outskirts of Sirsa are situated Radha Swami Satsang Ghar, Nirankari Bhawan, Dera Sacha Sauda, Tarkehswarm Dham (Tara Baba Kutia), Dera Bhuman Shah, Namdhari Dera Jeevan Nagar, Dera Jagmal Wali of Sant Baluchistani, Gurdwara Chormaar Sahib etc. etc.
Ex Deputy Prime Minister, Late Chaudhary Devi Lal and Ex CM Haryana Sh OP Chautala belong to Sirsa. It was a vision of Ch Devi Lal to provide good education facilities in Sirsa, his this dream was carved into shape by Ch. OP Chautala by setting up Ch Devi Lal University (CDLU) and Ch Devi Lal Memorial Engineering College at Sirsa, the grandsons of Ch. Devi Lal could not sit idle in enhancing the dreams of Ch Devi Lal, Jan Nayak Ch Devilal Vidyapeeth, (JCDV) a premier education provider which has more than seven institutes running under its aegis and has a beautiful campus on Barnala Road is a brain child of Sh. Ajay Singh MP and Sh. Abhay Singh Chautala MLA, both are grandsons of Ch Devi Lal and sons of Ch OP Chautala. Great Grand Son of Ch Devi Lal, Mr. Digvijay Chautala has set up JCD National Cricket Academy at Sirsa in 2008. Govt. National PG College of Sirsa is Haryana's largest college strength wise.
Famous cinematographer and contemporary Punjabi films producer, Manmohan Singh of DDLJ fame belongs to SIRSA. Sirsa is geographically at a strategic point for Air Warfare so it has a well established airbase of the IAF.
As we go towards west along the course of Ghagger River (erstwhile Sraswati) the rich soil of its surrounding areas famous for bumper rice and wheat crops also is a home to migratory birds from as far as Siberia, The Ottu Wier about 12 KM from Sirsa City is being developed into a big 1200Acres lake, a bird sanctuary, and a tourist attraction bythe present Government, though the polluted waters from the industrial affluents discharged upstream the river are keeping many of the migratory birds away still one can notice bird life there. Going past the Ottu Wier, is Rania town which was home to Bhatti Nawab of Rania he resisted the British and was freedom fighter of first war against The British for Independence in 1857.
Next to Rania is Jeevan Nagar the home of Namdhari Kuka Sikhs, the Kuka Sikhs were the army of Baba Ram Singh ji Namdhari and it is said that even before 1857 movement, the KUKA Sikhs were the first to blow bigule against the British by declaring non-cooperation, so chronologically this may be the advent of war against the British. Suba Khushal Singh of Village Thiraj was a freedom fighter of that era from Sirsa. The Namdhari Sikhs apart from their role in the freedom fight of India are also famous for Namdhari Music, as they sing the Sacred Gurbani Shabds in Raagas only, as prescribed in the holy Guru Granth. TheFamous Gazal Maestro Jagjeet Singh descends from a Namdhari Family. Namdharis are cow lovers and the protection of Cows from slaughter remains the foremost concern of Namdharis. Namdhari XI hockey had always been on the forefront, after a brief pause, again today Sardar Singh and Deedar Singh, products of Namdhari Hockey Academy, now play for the National Hockey team are from village Sant Nagar Sirsa. Unlike infamous Khap Panchayats of South-East Haryana, a social body LOKPANCHAYAT works for social justice and aims at resolving various disputes at village level, is active since almost last three decades in this very region.
On the South end of Sirsa is Dera Sacha Sauda, the dera apart from its religious activities, runs educational institutes and has put great emphasis upon sports in these institutes, in 2008, more than half a dozen of girls from Shah Satnam Ji Girls Education School played for and made the Indian team win the 12th Asian Women’s Roller Skating Hockey Champion Ship held at Kolkata. The dera also has a well built cricket stadium where veteran teams of India and Pakistan played a day and night series.
Dera Sar Sainath, presence of large number Bodh and Jain monks and other Sufee fakirs brought 1st and 10th Sikh Gurus, Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind to Sirsa, Guru Nanak stayed for forty days in the company of a sufi saint at the place where now historical Gurdwara Chilla Sahib is, Guru Gobind visited Dera Sar Sai Nath and also stayed there, the historic Gurdwara Patshahi Dasam is also in the midst of the main city. One lesser known mandir of the city near Ghanta Ghar Chowk is Khatu Shyam Mandir which has an ancient, 850 years old Idol of Lord Krishna installed in it. There is a pracheen Shiv Mandir inside the Gau Shala. Baba Bihari Samadh on Rania road, which apart from its religious aura is also known for holding Indian music concerts at the samadhi regularly.Shankar Sharma a renowned painter has a Chitrashala in Nohria Bazar. Ramesh Chander Shalihas, Harbahjan Singh Rainu, Sukhchain Singh Bhandari, Puran Moudgil, Rup Devgun, Harbhagwan Chawla....and several more are famous writers/poets from Sirsa.
Village Ludesar has a war memorial of Second World War martyrs. While the jawans of today also have never left themselves behind in the supreme sacrifice for their motherland, more recently there were at-least three martyrs from Sirsa in the Indian Army who laid their lives fighting for India in the Kargil war.
Sirsa shares its borders with Rajasthan & Punjab so a trilateral fusion of cultures of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana can be seen only in this city. As varied as its culture is its climate from touching as low as 7degree Celsius in winter to as high as 47 degrees in the summer. Yet SIRSA is always appreciated for the extraordinary tolerance of its people and their warm hospitality.
