Haemcon-2008 IMA-ISBTI State Conference

A state level joint annual conference of IMA CGP (Indian Medical Association-College of General practitioners) and ISBTI (Indian Society of Blood transfusion and Immunohaematology) was held at Panchayat Bhawan Sirsa on 6th July. Delegates from all over Haryana, Punjab as well as from Chandigarh attended the day-long conference, which had expert lectures fortified with slide show presentations; the lecture hall had display of motivational cum informative banners also.

On this occasion a souvenir Haemcon 2008 was also released. The souvenir edited by Dr. Anjani Aggarwal, (See Pictures and Video) had more than half a dozen, technical/medical articles on blood transfusion as well as legal information about Act no. 11 of 2008. The act mentions legal remedies to safe guard doctors and paramedics from assaults.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Mr. Yudhbir Singh Khialia, A.D.C. Sirsa, who himself is a crusader of the voluntary blood donation movement. The notable speakers on the occasion were Dr. Savita Basu, HOD Department of Transfusion Medicine, Govt Medical College Chandigarh. Dr Vinod Tayal President IMA Haryana State, Dr. Atul Sachdev HOD Department of Medicine, Govt. Medical College Chandigarh spoke about diagnosis of HIV patients & Post exposure prophylaxis. Dr. Sanjay D’ Cruz of Department of Medicine, GMCH Chandigarh, delivered a talk on Management Protocol for Anaemia. Dr S.K. Kochar Principal Maharaja Agarsain Medical College Agroha (Hisar), Dr V. Mohan Director principal, Adesh Institute of Medical science & Research Center, Bhatinda were also present as guests of honour.

Mr Yudbir Singh Khyalia ADC Sirsa delivered a motivational lecture on the topic, ‘How to make Life more Meaningful’ It may be mentioned that the ADC before joining civil services had a stint as a lecturer in English at Govt College Hoshiarpur (Click Hyperlink). Mr Khyalia also informed that Sirsa has become the first district in India to be completely open-defecation-free. He also said that there is proposal to do Blood Grouping of whole district population that is about 12 lac people in the near future.

Dr G.K. Aggarwal welcomed the delegates he thanked the delegates for sparing time to attend the conference and hoped that the conference comes to the expectations of all. (Video also)

Dr Ved Beniwal said that IMA Sirsa branch is blessed generation after generation, what the older generations initiated, the younger generation did that better, IMA has a healthy tradition to pat juniors and colleagues. (Also See Video Byte Dr Ved Beniwal)

Dr R.M. Arora told SIRSA NEWS that Blood Component therapy is now available at Sirsa .This has been made possible because of installation of component separator machine in the local Shiv Shakti Blood Bank. Now patients with Dengue fever who need platelets will not have to be referred outside Sirsa for want of platelets. Similarly patients with haemophilia and bleeding disorders will benefit immensely from this.

Dr RM Arora informed the delegates that apart from hosting this second consecutive state level IMA-ISBTI conference, Sirsa also boasts of being the venue of first state-level IMA-CGP conference not only of Haryana State but of any state of India. Dr Savita Basu HOD Dept of Transfusion Medicine Govt. Medical College, Chandigarh, gave a detailed technical description about various aspects of Clinical use of Blood Components. Talking to Sirsa News she said that the blood taken as donation is tested for HIV, Hapatitis B, Hapatitis C, Malaria, Parasite Syphilis, it is definetly of high standards as per govt established parameters. Dr. Manisha Mehta, Dr RK Mehta, Dr. Vinod Gupta, Dr. VP Goyal, Dr RS Sangwan, Dr. Karan Singh, Dr Sher Singh, Dr MM Talwar, Dr, Ashish Khurana, Dr Ashok Gupta, Dr. SP Garg, Dr MR Bansal, Dr Parveen Tomar, Dr Bhawana Aggarwal, Dr BR Bishnoi, Dr GN Verma, Dr Dinesh Gijwani, Dr Shailesh Tomar, Dr Daya Ram and several paramedics and health workers also attended the conference.

The Medical Fraternity was requested to come forward and motivate people for voluntary blood donations. Earlier in the day many of the delegates also visited Shiv Shakti Blood Bank run by Shiv Shakti Rakt Data Samiti, the visitors were impressed with the efficient and professional management of the Blood Bank and appreciated the high standard of services provided by the Blood Bank.

Some of the highlights, topics of discussions and announcements at Haemcon2008 were as below

  • Every Day Practice-Blood Transfusion
  • Anaemia and AIDS encountered in every day practice.
  • Most modern aspects of self improvement: academic-knowledge compliment.
  • More than 10 doctors arranged blood donation camps in their nursing homes.
  • Motivated public to donate blood.
  • Joint efforts of ISBTI & IMA-CGP to recruit voluntary donors and provide safe blood to every human being.
  • Future plans: Coming year: create resource persons from IMA & ISBTI resources.
  • Enrol minimum 500 motivators & lectures on blood donations from IMA resource.
  • To Achieve 100% Voluntary blood donation in one year.
  • Blood Grouping of Whole district population that is about 12 lac people, Rs96 lacs fund for this Herculean Job.
  • Negative Group Club formation.
  • Maintaining of village rosters.
  • More than 65% voluntary donations.
  • Teach rational component use.
  • Latest technology in blood transfusion to be availed by every doctor.

It was also mentioned that Distt Rohtak has less than 20,000 units of blood collections in year compared to15,000 blood units from a remote District that is Sirsa.
Scenario by Mr. Khyalia ADC : Educational institutes holding camps twice a year, (from present once a year). Next time this program this program shall be for two days and shall be sponsored by his department.
