Old age – why die for money? - Col RD Singh Retd

We are staying in a colony where maximum people are leading a retired life, including a large number of defence personnel. By and large, their children are married and settled. So, it is husband and wife staying together, with very little responsibility and baggage. But still, many of us are not happy. I tried to reason out why, and the answer is – still craving for more. Despite having hung our uniform or retired from a govt job or business, we still want to amass more money, and materialistic pleasures. Hence, you find many veterans involved in property dealings, which is a sure way to get tension in the old age. Quite a few, are busy lending money to earn high interest rates, and thereby inviting tension for themselves. Very few are working for the joy of it or rendering social service.

As senior citizens, if we have planned our finances well, we should be able to live comfortably within our pension and investments. Work we must as long as we can, as it is good for our health and happiness. But this work should be related more to doing what we enjoy and not to mainly make more money. Yes, money is important, but should not be the main focus. Our main goal should be happiness. This comes with detachment and not attachment with wealth and things material. Luxury cars, big houses, fat bank balances, latest clothes etc are symbols of external sources of happiness. These do not last and disappear very fast. Once we have got these, we want more. It creates anxiety and unhealthy competition, in wanting to show others how much we have, and how ahead of others we are.
Why can’t we let go, atleast at this age, when we have lived our first innings well, children settled, and very little to worry about. Why can’t we relax, and seek happiness from within?  The happiness from within comes when we have strong value system, and live a life of high morality and ethics. It also comes by working for a cause, and becoming a contributor rather than just a taker. Friends, at this age of 60 or plus, atleast now, lets think beyond self. What will we do even if we got a crore of rupees more? Just two of us, how much can we eat, and what will we do with a fleet of cars. If we build a mansion, who will maintain it?  With passing time, it will become more of a burden than luxury. Rather, we should be happy living in a manageable house, as per our requirement, and turn it into a home home, with a soul.
Enough of rat race, and enough of tensions in life. In our silver years now, lets relax, and enjoy peace of mind. Let go. For that, it has to be a simple life of giving, and sharing. Lets go for a morning walk together, laugh aloud, and share each others concerns. Lets devote few hours to social service or pursuing our hobbies. Lets also stop expecting much from our children who are married and settled. In case, they can spend some time with us, it is a blessing. But our happiness will not be governed by them.  Control of our life is in our hands. Lets enjoy each day, making the best of every moment.

About The WIFS Program:
The Government has decided to implement the Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) Programme for adolescents. WIFS Programme is based on the empirical evidence that weekly supplementation of 100mg Iron and 500µg Folic acid is effective in decreasing prevalence of anaemia in adolescent age group. The programme is free of cost and Iron and Folic Acid deworming tablet, along with testing and counselling services would be provided completely free.
The progamme will be implemented in both rural and urban areas and will cover school going adolescent girls and boys from 6th to 12th class enrolled in government/government aided/municipal schools through the platform of Schools and out of school adolescent girls through the platform of Aganwadi centers.

This programme will cover approximately 13 Crore beneficiaries and will address the challenge of high prevalence and incidence of anaemia amongst adolescent girls and boys (10-19 years). Modalities of implementation  are as below:
-          Administration of supervised free Weekly Iron-folic Acid Supplements of 100mg elemental iron and 500µg Folic acid to target population.
-          Fixed day strategy under which preferably Monday to be declared as “Anaemia Control day” or “WIFS day”.
-          Screening of target groups for moderate/severe anaemia and referring these cases to an appropriate health facility.
-          Biannual de-worming (Albendazole 400mg), six months apart, for control of helminthes infestation.
-          Information and counselling for improving dietary intake and for taking actions for prevention of intestinal worm infestation.
-          Convergence with key stakeholder Ministries like Ministry of Women and child Development and Ministry of Human Resource Development.
Adolescent Anaemia has been a long standing problem in India and the country has a high prevalence.  However, there has been a 5% decline in incidence of anemia amongst adolescents between National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-II (1998-99) and  National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-III (2005-06).
The prevalence of anaemia  (Haemoglobin value of <12 13g="" adolescents="" amongst="" and="" as="" boys="" bureau="" g="" girls="" haemoglobin="" high="" in="" is="" monitoring="" national="" nbsp="" nutrition="" o:p="" of="" per="" report="" survey.="" the="" value="">
It is estimated that more than 5 Crores adolescents are anaemic in India.
According to NFHS -III data, over 55 % of adolescent boys and girls in the age group of 15-19 years are anaemic. Adolescent girls in particular are more vulnerable to anaemia due to the rapid growth of the body and loss of blood during menstruation. According to NFHS-III, almost 56% of adolescent girls aged 15-19 years suffer from some form of anaemia. Of these, 39% are mildly anaemic while 15% and 2% suffer from moderate and severe anaemia respectively.  In India, the highest prevalence of anaemia is reported between the ages 12-13 years, which also coincides with the average age of menarche. With increase in age, the prevalence of anaemia among girls remains almost stagnant, while among boys, the prevalence rate reduces.
The reasons for anaemia amongst adolescents are:
- Growth spurt leading to increased demandof Iron  in the body
-  Poor dietary intake of Iron
- Worm infestation and high rate of infection
- Increased loss of Iron due to onset of menstruation (in girls)

Watch Video: 1st Significant Monsoon Rain 08 July 2013 in Sirsa City. The rain that lasted for about an hour in the afternoon brought big respite from Hot and Humid weather persisting since last many days.
However most of the city roads turn into pools in no time with every episode of rain. Year of after year tall claims of administration are washed away in just few minutes of rain. It may be good luck of Sirsa that every rains lasts not more than a couple of hours and the next rain returns after a gap of 24 hours to a few days, this allows water to slowly gets drained off the aged sewage system otherwise a longer spell of rain can cause havoc and may develop a situation like that of mini flood as Sirsa City contours are like a Pot.

Address & Interaction with the students of Sirsa
“I am born with wings”  “When I wish upon a star, Makes no difference who I am.
Anything my heart desires Will come to me”
I am delighted to be with the students of Sirsa and interact with the students, teachers and staff members. My greetings to all of you. Dear friends, when I am in front of large number of youth of this
region, I am thinking what thoughts I can share with you. I realize how the contributions of the youth in the past have continuously contributed to the world of today in many fields.  I would like to assert that “No youth today need to fear about the future”. How? The ignited mind of the youth is the most powerful resource on the earth, under the earth and above the earth.  Dear young friends, I would like to talk on the topic “I am born with wings”.
Criteria for achievement for youth
How does achievement come? There are four proven steps; having an aim in life before 20 years of age, acquiring knowledge continuously, hard work towards the aim and perseverance to defeat the problem and succeed. Dear young friends, I am sure, every one of you made up your mind what you will be? Definitely each one of you will fly and fly towards your mission.  At this point let me recall  the famous verses of a 13th century Persian Sufi poet Jalaluddin Rumi:
I will fly “I am born with potential. I am born with goodness and trust. I am born with ideas and dreams. I am born with greatness. I am born with confidence. I am born with wings. So, I am not meant for crawling, I have wings, I will fly I will fly and fly”
My message to you is that education gives you wings to fly. Achievement comes out of fire in our sub-conscious mind that “I will win”.  So, each one of you assembled here, will have “Wings of Fire”.
The Wing of Fire will indeed lead to great achievements in life and career. I am sure all of can do it!
Unique You When I see you young friends with the mission of hope for great achievements, let me discuss with you, how you can be unique? Let us study together certain unique events by unique achievers. Eight unique achievers in inventions and discoveries Dear friends, Look up, what do you see, the light, the electric bulbs.  Immediately, our thoughts go to the inventor Thomas Alva Edison, for his unique contribution towards the invention of electric bulb and his electrical lighting system.
When you hear the sound of aero plane going over your house, whom do you think of?  Wright Brothers proved that man could fly of course at heavy risk and cost. Whom does the telephone remind you of? Of course Alexander Graham Bell. When everybody considered a sea travel as an experience or a voyage, a unique person questioned during his sea travel from United Kingdom to India.  He was pondering on why the horizon where the sky and sea meet looks blue? His research resulted in the phenomena of scattering of light.  Of course,   Sir CV Raman was awarded Nobel Prize.
Do you know an Indian Mathematician who did not have formal higher education but had inexhaustible spirit and love for mathematics which took him to contribute to the treasure houses of mathematical research – some of which are still under serious study and engaging all-available world mathematicians’ efforts to establish formal proofs? He was a unique Indian genius who could melt the heart of the most hardened and outstanding Cambridge mathematician Prof G H Hardy.
In fact, it is not an exaggeration to say that it was Prof. Hardy who discovered a great mathematician for the world.  This mathematician was of-course Srinivasa Ramanujan for whom every number was a divine manifestation.
Do you know the scientist who is famous for Chandra Limit which describes the maximum mass (~1.44 solar masses) of a white dwarf star, or equivalently, the minimum mass for which a star will ultimately collapse into a neutron star to black hole following a supernova. Two of his students got the Nobel Prize before him. It is of-course the famous Nobel Laureate Chandrasekhar Subramanian .
Friends, there was a great scientific lady who is known for discovering Radium. She won not one, but two Nobel Prizes, one for physics and another for chemistry. Who is she? She is Madam Curie. Madam Curie discovered radium and she was doing research on the effect of radiation on human system. The same radiation which she discovered, affected her and she sacrificed her life for removing the pain of human life.
Whenever I describe to you young friends, scientific historical events, you all jumped. Name of the scientist –technologist who created the great event, they are the unique personalities. Young friends, can you join such unique performers of scientific history, you can, definitely you can. Let us study together, how it can be made possible? Friends, I have, so far, met 15 million youth in a decade’s time. I learnt, “every youth wants to be unique, that is, YOU! But the world all around you, is doing its best, day and night, to make you just “everybody else”.
In the home, dear young fellows you are asked by your parents to be like neighbours’ children for scoring good marks. When you go to school, your teacher says “why not you become like the first five
rankers in the class”. Wherever you go, they are saying “you have to be somebody else or everybody else”. Now, dear young friends, how many of you would like to be unique yourself.
The challenge, my young friends, is that you have to fight the hardest battle, which any human being can ever imagine to fight; and never stop fighting until you arrive at your destined place, that is,
A UNIQUE YOU!
