English Promotion Forum SIRSA conducted a seminar on ‘Importance of English in Modern Era’ at the premises of Police Lines Sirsa. The Forum honored Dr. O.P. Bansal, founder member of the Forum & Correspondent P.T.I. & Hindustan Times for his contribution to English journalism and his dedicated services for betterment and greater proliferation of English in Sirsa.
Mr. Rai Singh Saharan (DSP Retd.), President English Promotion Forum Sirsa, speaking on the occasion said that the forum, which started with a humble beginning 5 years ago, has attained great importance now. Mr. Saharan gave numerous examples of common errors and omissions in English usage. He deliberately gave several synonyms of Bribe to unwind many of the attendees, who were also cops. Mr. Saharan invited from the Police staff to come on the podium and talk whatever they can without hesitation, but none could dare to face the audience from HPS cadre of the Haryana Police better known for its bravery.
Mr. Rai Singh, who might not be having up to mark oratory skills, but his zeal for self improvement of English and more so to spread it amongst others is invincible.
Mr. Vikas Arora, SSP SIRSA who presided over the function as Chief Guest said that already have been said about the need for the promotion of English, he shall instead talk about that why every individual should develop an inclination for becoming a better citizen. He even elucidated a Mamma test and BABA test that anyone can apply to himself or herself to know if the act that he or she is going to do is socially correct or not. Mr. Arora said that apart from the good English of Mr. Bansal, he appreciates him even more for being a nice human being.
In his brief Address to the audience Dr. O.P. Bansal said that English is known as Lingua Franca because its not a static language, He said that unlike many puritan languages, English is open to assimilate words from all world languages and dialects, this is the major reason that its status has gradually risen to language of the world and more and more people are keen to be proficient at it. Dr. Bansal said that if we ignore this beautiful language than it shall be on our own peril. In today’s globalization, no nation can progress without embracing English wholeheartedly. Dr. Bansal said when I came to know half a decade ago that the idea of English Promotion Forum came from a cop he was surprised at first but after meeting ever enthusiastic DSP Mr. Saharan, I felt that he is the right choice to empower English in this District. He said that at the mention of word Police people get kind of uneasy chill but things have changed for better with a quantum leap, since Mr. Vikas Arora has taken over as the District Police Chief.
Mr. Pankaj Yadav, ADC Sirsa also addressed the audience but had to leave the program mid way to attend priorities elsewhere. Surprisingly the ADC speaking at the Forum said that English should be optional and not forced upon students.
Dr. R.S. Sangwan said that this rich district of Haryana is poor in English; even amongst news media we have lone Dr. O.P. Bansal dedicated to English journalism.
Mrs. Nisha Rathore, in her flamboyant pronunciation said that the Forum’s camps held at Air Force Station School (KV1) and few other locations were runaway success.
Prof. Harjinder Singh of National College said that there are problems at grass root level that need to be tackled for promotion of English.
Prof Dungar Ram (member HSSSSB) said that he still remembers that hot dusty April day when this forum was constituted. He had been teaching English at Sirsa and has observed that even today Sirsa is way behind in English and more needs to be done to improve upon this grim situation. He said that English Promotion Forum is doing its bit earnestly. He said that he was abundantly pleased to observe that the English Promotion Forum has become stronger in the past 5 years. He informed how we can ignore this language that is spoken by more than 7 million people in India itself.
